HWC Invited to Participate in UN Women’s Gender Equality Forum

HWC was invited to participate in UN Women’s Gender Equality Forum before the launch of the Small Island Development States conference in Antigua Barbuda.

Carine Jocelyn, HWC founder presented during the forum’s meeting and also the Civil Society Forum as an invited guest speaker. Highlighting and applauding the work of women led organizations was the theme of her remarks. Ms. Jocelyn shared the importance of the need for fair US policies towards Haiti, and addressed the lack of a woman voting member of the current Presidential Transitional Council. With donors and friends in the audience, she stated “If you have implemented projects, programs, in Haiti over the years and it hasn’t worked.. please don’t try it again. Haitian women organizational leaders have to have a decision making seat at the table!”

HWC finalizes emergency response plan.

With the understanding that in late March, Haiti was at a major crisis point, HWC launched an emergency response plan. As a result, we have met our overall goals including the following:

  • Advocating for several HWC partners to obtain emergency funding by advocating with supportive funders. A total of over $70,000 was disbursed to several partners.
  • Providing multiple group counseling sessions to Haiti’s dynamic human rights advocates with the support of a Haitian therapist.
  •  Providing organizations with newly purchased  cell phones to support their technology needs.
  • Providing locally sourced hygiene items to partners.
  • Reinforcing our Girls Opportunity Alliance partners to support our 20 youth program participants.
  • Hiring a new team member to address our commitment to gender equity, capacity building and advocating for Haitian women led organizations.
